PotatoesEveryone knows about my obsession with food. If there is something new to taste and eat - I am in. In my new quest to eat the local food of our holiday destination, my first stop is Ireland. I do like eating potatoes but the Irish take it to another level. A level I must say has made me a little sick of potatoes.

Road Signs in DoolinWho needs a GPS when you have maps - so I thought. The constant reminder of hiring a GPS is plastered on every car rental website, the door of each car rental shop and then there is Guy telling me how popular it is in Europe. A fancy toy or a necessity in Ireland?

Derry MuralAfter staying with Guy, we set off to Northern Ireland for a few days.  Well, talk about culture shock.  We were gobsmacked when we went on the Black Taxi tour of West Belfast.  So you read about violence in counties in the newspaper and you see it on the news when you care to watch, but goodness – when you see the results of it and feel the tension of it, you can’t help but think you’ve had one hell of a sheltered and lucky life.

Tish & ChristieThey say it never rains in Ireland, that it pours. And they were right, to some extent! We first got to Dublin and the weather was spectacular, the sun was shining there was barely a cloud in the sky!

UmbrellaAfter being here for 5 days now, the weather has been divine! Muggy and a little hot really, but really quite pleasant. And today, we got our first storm and downpour and boy - does it rain! Well, we’re here at the airport (in Qantas Club lounge which is nice!) and we’ve just said our last goodbyes… Yep, balled my eyes out and didn’t want the goodbyes to end :(

And yes, we are definately geeky (ok I admit it this time) for writing blogs even before we’re off the ground - but hey, what else can we do while we wait?!

ExitIt’s a touch over 2 weeks before we depart the country on one-way tickets. And it’s starting to finally sink in! As excited as we are, we’ve both had a few jitters and questioned why on earth we are leaving perfectly good jobs, a newly renovated unit and (what we consider) a great life here in Melbourne! We’re on an emotional roller coaster ride!! (more…)

Pound DollarI’ve been doing some research into the whole “working in the UK” thing and some advice that people give is to set up a UK bank account before you go.  That’s not to say it’s not impossible to do it over there (a very good friend leaves on Saturday and has decided to wait until she’s over there to set it up).  However, if anyone is interested, I’ve found these options… (more…)

WorldToday I received an email from STA travel about “Carbon Offsets” where for just $8 (domestic) or $20 (international), you can “offset” your flight’s carbon emissions.  What a fantastic idea!  There are so many people who are cautious about carbon emissions, yet still want to travel the globe. Then we feel guilty about wanting to do both.
