zeusAnother long weekend to make the most of, we headed to Athens for a few days to get reintroduced to that thing called a sun and to see the sights and well… drink the coffee!

Arriving in Athens at 2am was probably not the smartest thing to do, but we were definitely not on our own! We missed a bus and waited for another one and eventually got to the centre of town around 3.30am and checked into our hostel. But the place was still well and truly buzzing!

After a much needed sleep in, we took to the streets and started to explore. Market first stop – until we realised it was just raw meat, so we moved on pretty quickly.

Starving, we were on the hunt for some grub and found a lovely place near the Ancient Agora. With a beautiful view of the Acropolis, we wandered around the smaller sights such as the Monastiraki Square flea market, the Roman Agora, the National Gardens and Parliament in the beautiful sunshine. We saw loads of people drinking iced coffee, so we happily joined in and discovered the Greek Frappe was divine! And the gelati wasn’t so bad either :)

Next day, we were up early to visit the Acropolis in the beaming sun. It was hot – to say the very least. But it was stunning and worth the trek. The views were breathtaking and the age of the place astounding. We made our way down the hill and through the Ancient Agora. The number of people around was incredible. Next, we wandered the streets to do a bit of stall shopping/browsing. And another coffee too :) We found a nice place to eat dinner and sampled the local cuisine.

On our final day, we got up early for a change and headed to the Temple of Olympian Zeus which was started in 515BC and Hadrians Gate. After jumping on a tram and heading exactly in the wrong direction, we made our way back to the Panathenaic Stadium which held the first Olympic Games (modern) in 1896. Another lazy day, we found a cafe and sipped a frappe before heading home. Some cities are best explored slowly :)
