We headed to Bucharest in Romania for our second wedding anniversary. But this time we decided to go on a real weekend break and keep the sight seeing to a minimum!
When we landed, we expected a normal international airport. Instead we got Bucharest Airport. After waiting in a 30 minute queue just to get our passports stamped in a tiny tiny room, we were straight out the door to outside. Small to say the very least!
After trying to navigate to a place to catch a bus, we ended up following other tourists to where they thought the bus might leave from. There were no signs, no ticket booths and road works everywhere. So all us tourists were asking each other and locals and figured the spot we were at would do. Hey presto, a bus with our number rocked up, so we jumped on. Ticketless, we asked another tourist how he got his ticket and said it was at his bus stop, so we just winged it! On the way past, we saw the Arch de Tromphe which was pretty cool. We then figured out where we had to get off so did so.
So we headed for where we thought our hotel was. But unfortunately it wasn’t. And we had no map. We also had no idea where to go! We asked some locals if they knew the address or the hotel and they were helpful but also didn’t know where it was! So we called the hotel and tempers flaring, we had no idea where to go until Kim mentioned ‘Universidad’ and we were in!
Having had quite a few weekends away in a row, we went out for a quick bite to eat, back to the hotel and crashed until 10pm! Of course then we were awake, so late night movies it was!
Next day, we wandered off through the city to discover what made this place tick. We visited the palace which was massive to say the least. We went in to try get on a tour, but the next English tour wasn’t for another 4 hours or something like that, so we gave it a miss. Apparently the guides are really disinterested anyway, so we figured it was no huge loss!
We then wandered through a park to a garden that was absolutely bustling with people. The flowers in the garden were pretty and the ducks and dogs kept us entertained for a while. We kept wandering the city and found an interesting church and a memorial. We were starting to see the vast difference between buildings too. Some were beautiful and majestic, others looked like they were out of a slum. But all in all the city was quite nice and we weren’t bothered by locals much at all which was a nice change.
Next day we hit the shops and spent far too much money
We found the old part of town – and we took our lives into our own hands by walking through there. Scary man – wooden beams you had to balance on and dodge massive holes.
All safe, we were back to London in no time – ready for another working week…
