frankfurtWe had a great time in the gorgeous city of Frankfurt with our bestest buddy Guy to celebrate Australia Day! My favourite place in Europe (thus far) and not for any specific reason, but maybe because it felt so much like Melbourne… or just the great company :)

Ok, so I wasn’t smart about the whole flying with Ryanair thing. Hahn airport (an old US military base I was told today) is 1 hour and 45 minutes from Frankfurt city itself (it took Guy 11 minutes from Frankfurt airport to the city centre). Big mistake. Took 7 hours to get there and 8 to get back, which is definitely overkill.

Nonetheless, we got to the hostel at nearly 2am and were bubbling with the excitement of being in Germany, being with Guy and seeing all the ‘German’ innovations in the room we were staying in! For starters, the windows not only opened swinging outward horizontally, but also vertically. Then the shutters were controlled by a single pole that you fold up to wind. And that’s not to mention the lamps that doubled as shelves and the fact that it was the cleanest hostel in the world.

We dragged ourselves out of bed at 8.30am to go to a flea market along the river Main and wandered up through the city to check out the sites. After sampling the local food and the awesome hot apple juice (yummo), we found a nice cafe for a hot chocolate. Guy bought one that was actually flaming and the saltanas were that potent with alcohol they tasted like aircraft fuel. Interesting choice of hot chocolates :)

After buying 2 cameras (one for Guy, one for us), Guy went on a paparazzi binge. We had schnitzel and frankfurts for dinner followed by the local Aussie pub to celebrate Australia day! met some great Aussies, Brits and German’s and had a fantastic night!

Great weekend and can’t wait for Portugal next weekend!!
